Tribes have been designated by various nouns in India, some scholars have known it as tribal and some scholars have known it as a hill tribe, the British have termed it as a Dalit class and the Indian Constitution Scheduled Tribes.


According to Article 366 (25) of the Indian Constitution, Tribal means 'Tribal' or those parts or groups of tribal communities that are considered as Scheduled Tribes under Article 342 of the Constitution.

The number of tribes in India is given differently in different sources been given separately, according to the Department of Tribal Development Government of India, the number of tribal communities in India is 550.


According to 2011 population


According to the 15th census 2011, the number of scheduled tribes in India is 10,82,41,037, which is 8.6% of the total population of the country. Out of all the scheduled tribe population, 50.26% is male, 49.74% is female population.

 The highest scheduled tribe population in India is found in Madhya Pradesh, which is 21.1 percent of the total population of the state. According to the State and Union Territory based on the percentage of Scheduled Tribe population, it is found in 9.6 percent in Lakshadweep, followed by Mizoram.

 No tribes are found in Delhi, Pondicherry, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab. More Scheduled Tribes are found in Dadra Nagar Haveli, which is the highest in the Union Territory. Originally 212 tribes of the Indian Constitution were declared Scheduled Tribes. But presently there are 550 tribes in the list of scheduled tribes.

 As of 2011, the sex ratio of tribes is 990 as compared to the sex ratio of 978 in 2001. Thus the percentage of Scheduled Tribes in the country is 8.6% and Scheduled Caste percentage 16.6%.

Characteristics of Tribes


  • In the Khasi tribe, the marriage process is performed by sacrificing chickens and pigs.
  • In the Toda tribe, polygamy is found due to the practice of girl slaughter.
  • Hunting dances are found in Tharu and Jayanthi tribes.
  • The war dance is found among the tribes of Gaur, Bhil, Uraon and in this dance they make a loud sound using a weapon while going for hunting.
  • "Magic Dance" is found in the Oraon tribe.
  • "Tandi dance" is found in Santhal people.
  • In the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, "Youthsena" is accepted as the snake deity.
  • The Toda people perform their rituals keeping in mind the position of the stars and the moon.
  •  The Khond believes the man's sacrifice for the rain, believing that the way a tear falls from the victim's eyes and the way his wound bleeds, it rains.
  • The Tharu tribe lives in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh and in the Terai region of the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. This Hindus believe in religion and they give bread to their ancestors on Diwali and celebrate it as mourning day.
  • The people of the Munda tribe bring down all kinds of stones from the top of the mountain, due to which the rumble of the stone coincides with the lightning, they believe that doing so causes rain.
